Now we've seen the film...
The film we saw was a 1996 adaptation of the play, keeping almost faithful to Shakespeare's original script, but obviously having to make adaptations to the new context. Well, what do you think? How successful was the adaptation ? What about the casting of characters? Are the characters in the film as you had imagined them? Which scene did you find the most effective? Waiting for you comments on any aspect of the film.

At the very beginning of the film,I experienced a kind of shock, because I expected to watch a tragic film.To my surprise,I found myself watching a romantic comedy, but scene by scene sequence of events changed, the film turned into its own, tradegy.I also found it a bit modernized.Juliet kills herself with a gun instead of a dagger:)These kinds of changes in films may be ridicilious.I prefer watching its old version.I did not like this version much.To be honest, although I did not like the film,I appreciate that Romeo did not kill Paris at the end of the film.In fact,I have no idea about why Shakespeare wrote such an end for Paris. Finally,I want to say,the character that I liked most is Mercuito(!):)))He was veryy funny.Şeyda Çeşmeci
I agree with you;it was very different from the reading passage, and it wasn't effective at all.
ı didn't like the film. although it's funny , it's not romantic. I expected to watch film which has same effect with story. ı was very surprised. really it's a romantic comedy. at the last part when ı saw the romeo's face ı started to laugh:))))
I watched its old version and it attracted me. The character's clothes are original and their languages were comprihensible espicially JULİET's speech. This film which we watched in class, was modernized and their speechs were not comprihensible and it was funny. I didin't like it,it was exaggerated and changed most of it2s scenes. For example Balkony scene was very different from it's old version.
HATİCE ÖZBAŞI.
it was a disappointment for me because I was waiting for a different film and the characters were unusual.TO TELL THE TRUTH ,I DIDN`T LIKE IT ACTUALLY...
In my mind I had created a world that I had my own story,my own film and my own Romeo and Juliet. However after watching the film my more handsome Romeo was replaced by Leonardo Di Caprio ,and my more beautiful Juliet was replaced by Claire Danes.I said I wish I had not watched it.I wrote the same things for Beowolf, too.You read a book and then watch the film based on the book you read, but you can not get the same pleasure from the film as you got from the book.
I'm glad to hear that you prefer reading the book/play to watching films!
I think that Romeo and Juliet is a classic. It is brilliantly written and brilliantly acted and directed, and the film is more modern than classical.I want to say that in spite of the Shakespearian language, I got the meaning of the characters' statements immediately. The Shakespearian language was not a barrier at all.
At the beginning I was very surprised.I didn't expect such an entrance;it was like a comedy but later it became tragic.I liked the film, but I think that reading the book is much more effective than watching the film.

Altough the film is not very related to the original text, i liked the film, but i have to say that the film could be much more better...
At first I didn't like the film, but the movie settled down when Romeo and Juliet first came face-to-face. It was a delicately romantic moment whose magic was never quite matched by any other scene in the film. There is a lot of action and some dramatic music, which I liked. Good thing in the film is that they used Old English with American accent. The film is a modernization of Shakespeare's play , designed to appeal to a younger modern audience.Lastly I want to sat that it will always be the definitive film version of this classic

This film is incredible, although it is not very related to original text. I suppose originality was too much to take, which I believe adds much to the film and gives it authenticity. Supporting roles were wonderful, with the roles of mercutio and tybalt being exceptional, and the friar, who may be the most important character in the story.
The film released in 1968 is more related to the original than this one.Anyway,I didn't like the first part of the film, fighting, shouting, screaming etc. However,I really impressed at the end of the film especially when Romeo drank the poison immediately after Juliet opened her eyes:(Also,Benvolio's character is not reflected rightly in the film.
I tooght that we'll watch a classical film.altough it's funny I didn't enjoy it. I prefer to read its book.
Shakespeare's great love story in a modern American setting. Young lovers Romeo and Juliet find their romance threatened by the rivalry between their two warring families - the Montagues and Capulets - who are determined to keep the couple apart, whatever the consequences.
ı like the film. ı watched it two times. ıf ı watch again, ı am not bored. the original text is a bit different from the film text, but ı find adaptation successful. first ı watched the film, then ı listened to the text so ı couldn't imagined because ı know them. the first fighting scene's speech and the last scene ı find most effective parts.ıt is the most beautiful love story and film.
There are lots of differences between the film and the written text. I don't like the film at all, especially the first parts of it. At first it is just like a comedy film, and after a while it turns into a tragedy.. And what is more; it offers a trendy, contemporary re-telling of the classic love story, but it keeps the originality of Shakespeare's text.. Anyway I prefer reading it, rather than watching..:))
i think the film was not effective actually i was affected much more by the sonnet there were different intentions during the meetings of Romeo&Juliet.
Remember that, despite the foreshadowing of tragic events to come, the first two acts ARE a comedy, they end with the traditional ending of a comedy - a marriage. With the fight and the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt in the first scene of Act III, the tragedy begins.
I like both the film and the original text. Also there are differences. After I had watched the film, I understood the story very well. The film was like a comedy film at first, but then it turned into tragedy. In the film and the original text, events are improving very fast. This is like a real story in real life...
Watching the film was enjoyful but I was not impressed much. When we look at the film generally, effects were excellent and also, production was well-preaperad.
The film was very different from ı hoped. However, it's . Because of family feud, two lover died which impressed me.
Personally , i didn't like the film. I was expecting a film which represents the period the play was written in, not a 1996 adaptation. Some scenes were fun,but these weren't suitable for such a play. Moreover , some of the characters were missing in the film. The scene which impressed me was the one Tybalt and Benvolio were fighting ..
I was absent in the lesson(only it was the first and last time I was absent)Anywhere else. I couldn't watch the film , and I asked my some of my friends about the film, and I understood they didn't like the film. Maybe if it was not an adaptation film, they would like it more than they did. They said they found the film more than different than the original version.
As everyone did, also I was surprised with the humorous beginning, but I also affected by touching ending scene in which Romeo & Juliet glanced at eachother for the last time.I find the last scene in the movie more impressive;however, the film should be more serious about the characters,a few scene,I think.
