"Wage the immortal war with Wit"!!

Welcome back after the winter break!
This week we picked up our journey from the Restoration period and read the introductory part of John Dryden's "MacFlecknoe". Satire is a predominant feature of Restoration literature, and in this case Dryden used the mock-heroic poetic form to criticise a personal enemy, Thomas Shadwell. We no longer see the metaphorical flourishes of Shakespeare that appealed to our hearts; instead, we have elevated language that drives the subject of the satire into the ground. We laugh because it appeals to our intelligences.
What were your favourite expressions from the extract we read?

After the class, when I went to my dormitory,I listened to Mozart and Beethoven to see the Mozart effect.I listened Mozart's 40.symphony and Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.I do not feel anything.I thought how these affects brain, but as soon as I listened Beethoven's Love Story,I saw the difference. It touched my heart, and Mac Flecknoe:) to be honest I really enjoyed while reading.

Those who listen to rap music knows that most of the rap singers are the owner of a poetic soul. The only difference between them and the poets is that they match their poems with the music called “beat”,and unlike the poems reading their works softly ,rap singers sing their songs hard.In this way they try to send message to those whose souls are captured by devil (malicious people).
I want to say that there are good rappers and the bad ones. The poems that are written to those bad rap poets are called “diss” –abbreviation of the “distortion”.The job of writing and reading the diss matching it with a suitable melody is called “sending diss”.The poem that John Dryden wrote for Thomas Shadwell looks like “diss”.John Dryden sent diss to Thomas Shadwell, in other words.:-)

it is such a strange poem that I am actually confused:)first of all, Fleacknoe is the king of nonsense , it says. The poet looks down on the king and his son...so,I think it is not an effective poem for me..Also ,I will listen to Mozart and Beethoven while studying and try if it is working:):)

despite the poem shows the intelligence of poet, ı don't like it very much. ı like the poem which contains emotion and love such as shakespeare! this period is different from the shakespeare time. only ı like satires in poem ; they are signs of clever mind. " besides his goodly Fabrick fills the eye" this is interesting expression that ı like. sometimes nonsense or being king of nonsense is necessary in life!

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant..!! Mac flecknoe is an outstanding mocking heroic poem. John Dryden has actually criticized one of the bad poets of his time - Thomas Shadwell- ironically with his bitchy lines..:))
I really enjoyed it..

After shakespeare, the restoration period.I laughted very much in the lesson. The author critized the king and his son. What made me think is that when we study,we should listen classic music.it is very different thing, isn't it?I liked the poem.

The poem is excellent, espically its humorous language.Characteristics are stupid and the subject can be conceived as a nonsense situation, but the messeage that is wanted to be given in this poem is so logical that everything should be with its equal.
In addition, i used to listen to classic music when i was in high school especially in the last year of it:)this kind of music really makes people think deeply.

The language is interesting, concentrated, catchy and very humorous. The satiric point, lies in Dryden's use of elevated approach to convey something that's is ordinary.

when you read this poem firstly you think that he praises the king and his son but later we understand that it is not like this. that is, I enjotyed ıt.

In the class, I was confused at first, because there is a heroic poem and a satire, but after understanding the issue I was influenced a lot. I thought that John Dryden was a highly intelligent poet.
I quite liked his criticising, because while criticising he makes also people laugh. e.g: I laughed a lot in the class:)
Also, he doesn't declare the son's name(Shadwell),so I was curious about it and thought who might be the person.

I strongly advise our writers to read this sentence. This sentence clarifies the basic aspect of the Mac Flecnoe's main point.Satire but what a satire they used.Dryden played with sentence like toy for expressing his views.Liretaure is always answer for all oarts of life.I would prefer dying than living without literature.

I have difficulties in understanding the poem because l am used to read poems that show their meaning directly.Dryden used different way.The satire... In the Restoration period we studied other poems that poet used the satire.I think this poem is the one that we laugh while studying it:)

In my opinion restoration period resembles to the Turkish Republic Foundation. With the Turkish Republic Foundation many chances were done especially in the field of education, economy, litrature, architacture, and social life. It affects English people’s life positively because social class differences were removed.

One of the famous
satiric poems of Dryden is MacFlecknoe. This poem treats its subject, Thomas
Shadwell, with irony and ridicule.

I want to say that Fleacknoe is nonsense poem , there is satire between form and mean.I don't believe the Mozart effect because I could'nt study with music even it is Beethoven's song.

John Dryden is a very very clever and intelligent poet in the history and also in the world. He uses unbelievable words against his enemy Shadwell because no one can use this satire and irony to his enemy or any unwanted person. He shows Shadwel the king of the nonsense and stupidity and also Flecknoe. And he makes us laugh at Shadwell in a way that we can not recognize this process because he writes in very very fluent way.

Macfleckno is a mock-heroic poem by John Dryden. It is full of satire and criticism. The writer uses satire professionally. While reading it, you can immediately start to burst into laugher or you can nod and say ' what a satire', you need to think about it to understand the satire. The poem is the result of disaggreements between Thomas Shadwell( another famous poet at this time) and John Dryden. John Dryden says such something about Shadwell that we have a Turkish aphorism about it ( kavgada bile söylenmez:)))

John Dryden criticizes Thomas Shadwell in a satiric and smart way. The hero of this poem is Shadwell who considers himself the heir of Ben Johnson. However, Dryden claims that he is the son of Richard Flecknoe who was an unsuccessful and unpopular poet of his time. Dryden says that Shadwell inherits the throne of stupidity from Flecknoe. I like the mock heroic poem, but I wonder how Shadwell responds to Dryden… He must be an important poet as well regarding that Dryden feels the need to talk back to him…maybe..
