"I'm half-sick of shadows," said the Lady of Shallot

The story of "The Lady of Shallot" is said to come from an ancient Italian story, and Tennyson made connections with the Arthurian legends through Sir Lancelot and Camelot.
The first few verses of the poem set the scene-
"On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And through the field the road run by
To many-tower'd Camelot;
And up and down the people go,
Gazing where the lilies blow
Round an island there below,
The island of Shalott.

Willows whiten, aspens quiver,
Little breezes dusk and shiver
Through the wave that runs for ever
By the island in the river
Flowing down to Camelot.
Four grey walls, and four grey towers,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle imbowers
The Lady of Shalott. "
We learn that there is a mysterious lady imprisoned in a tower on a lonely island in the middle of the river that flows to King Arthur's castle, Camelot. Nobody has seen her, only the workers in the fields have heard her singing.
It turn out that she has some kind of curse upon her, the origins of which are very unclear nd even she does not know for sure -"She has heard a whisper say....". She is forbidden to look out of the window directly, and has to view the world via a mirror. She weaves a tapestry of the things she sees in the mirror to keep herself occupied.
While she doesn't seem to be too bothered by her fate - "And little other care hath she", she does feel depressed when she sees young people living their lives - "I'm half sick of shadows".
One day she sees the reflection of the gallant, handsome knight Sir Lancelot returning from a quest and she is caused to look out of the window toward Camelot. Then the curse begins...
The tapestry flies out of the window, the "mirror crack'd from side to side". She leaves the tower and finds a boat in which she lays herself down. The boat carries her down the river to Camelot, and she slowly dies while it takes her there. She dies singing her own death song. The boat finds its way to King Arthur's hall, where all wonder at what or who she is. Poignantly, considering he doesn't realise that he is the cause of her death:
"But Lancelot mused a little space
He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."
There are several interpretations of this poem:
1. Women are expected to behave in certain ways and should suffer the consequences if they are disobedient.
2. The idealisation of women as untouchable "angels" or "saints" and their consequent isolation from society is used by men to oppress them and to keep them in their place.
3. All humans have emotional needs, but artists and scholars must make sacrifices if they want to make their achievements. What happens to such people if they suffer a moment of weakness? Are they destined to suffer a fall as a result?
Remember that Lord Tennyson was Poet Laureate, and a reluctant one. He had to write poems to please and praise the Queen and State rather than those which expressed his own inspirations.
I love this poem, especially with the visual representations by Waterhouse (which are, incidently, exhibited in Manchester City Art Gallery....) and the musical adaptation by Loreena McKennitt. I hope you enjoyed it too.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson tells the story of a lady who dies for her love, but Tennyson leaves the cause of the curse and its meanings unknown. He makes us to focus on two different worlds with separate genders assigned to each - male & female. Women's work is inside the home while active world in the outside is the work of the men. The "Lady of Shallot" is a lovely and sad poem about a tender spirit who is trapped in the women domesticity, and also who cannot battle against stronger men world. But it is better to die in the real world than to live in an imaginary world. I really love love love it..:) It is one of the greatest poems ever written. It is also accompanied by beautiful rhymes. I particularly love the lines; Four grey walls, and four grey towers. Overlook a space of flowers..
But I have a question. Who is this Lady???

I really loved the song that we listened at that lesson:)It was great.The song made the legend much more touching and emotional.Actually I still listen it.Also the theme of the story differs it from other literature works with which we are acquantied and make it more interesting.

When I listened to the song in the lesson I liked it very much. It was very emotional. It is very strange that the woman viewed the world via mirror and she loved a man but the man did never know this.

The things that the Lady of Shallot are very challenging.She doesn't have any connection to the worl without the mirror,and the other challenging thing is her love.She loves a man ,but the man doesn't know it...The conditions that she live are very difficult..

The Lady of Shallot tell the story of a woman lives in a tower. this tower is on an island which is in a river. The river is beside King Arthur's Camelot. It is said that there is a curse on her but we do not now the cause of the curse. The lady knows that if she directly looks out of windows the curse will begin. she can just look the reflect af a mirror. At the end because of the curse "The Lady of Shallot" dies. As we read the poem while listening to its music i very very loved it. Why did Alfred, Lord Terrison write this poem? It is said that there may be different goals. first one is about the Victorian Age's women. In this period women were seen only a mother or a wife. they were like in a prison. they did not allowed work even go out. Secondly, because Lord Terrison was the Laureate Poet of that period he had to praise the queen. so, he felt himself in a tower and alone. I really love the poem.

i've really adored its song!i remember that i watched a cartoon of this excellent story.tennyson exaggerated his intention a bit i think..i have a personal idea about why the girl is imprisoned in the castle,but absence of a reason identified by the poet himself creates a question mark in readers' mind.i'm explaining my own idea:we dont know how long and why she is in that castle.there is no beginning time identified because she has already been there since she was born.and her offence leading her to born and live in that castle all along her life is the fact that she is a WOMAN!a poor,unintelligent and unwise woman she is according to tennyson.so,i find the topic orginal and interesting.the main idea is fine,but i'm sure nobody wants to be the lady of a shallot. :)
its rhymes are excellent;its description is excellent;the characters are excellent, and the music is perfect!

ıt is really a good poem but both tragic and interesting. We don't know why curse? Also it is a bad thing to look the world via a mirror.And it is perhaps be interesting to die because of a man who you don't know, but is love that you cannot do sometimes.And tha man does not know that she died for his.

The Lady of Shallot is an interesting story. It is amazing that a woman lives on an island alone and she can only see outside by reflection of it on mirror and she believes that it is forbidden for her to look out of window and one day she dies since she looks out the window.

Lady of Shallot is stuck in tower, and she has been cursed, so she has to weave constantly. She can not look directly out the window, nor leave the tower. Soon, she abandons her place and dies of the curse. The poem of this plot describes a tragic love. The roles of the characters in the poem illustrate the Victorian image of ideal woman: spiritual, mysterious, pure, dedicated to her womanly tasks like looking after the children and tend to the house. It is easy to notice a sense of threat; the neglect of her duty for pursuing her love justified her punishment... Additionally, I really like it :-)

I liked the poem and the song.The song reflected what the words wanted to say.I liked the imaginary story,but its end was tragic:(

The lady of Shallot is one of the greatest poems ever written and definitely one of my favorite poems. It is heart- wrenching. Even after all these years, it still appeals to me. I think all the people felt what the Lady feels at some point in our lives. I suggest that if you haven't read it, you definitely read. It is long, but worth it, I think. When I first read the all parts of the poem, it affected me so much that I wanted to paint it on my walls. It has drama, adventure, suspense and romance. I always seem to adore this line: "I'm half-sick of shadows". What a line!! In addition to the poem, a video on youtube captures the emotion and the mystery of the poetry very well. Now, I have lots of emotions for the Lady. Tennyson’s poem is so beautiful.

As I consider a cruelty to keep a bird in a cage, it is really so bad to imprison a humanbeing in a narrow place till the end of her life for no reasons. Also, ıt must be upsetting to look at the world in a mirror. İt is said this poem reflects the conditions that women in the victorian period are in. However, even a creature in the world, not just women do not deserve this kind of treatment. However, to be honest, I liked the poem, and the song. Im impressed with the voice of the singer..:)

it is very interesting story.to be punished for a women just looking with naked eyes out of window... however the story explains very clearly, the point of views of the period to women. Also, i did like the song. ı hope the questions about this subject in the exam are not hard:). Teacher, the previous sentence is for you;)

The Lady of Shallot is also a poem about being a poet or an artist. Tennyson liked to use the woman and the poet interchangeably, and here we have a woman who weaves all day (her art) and cannot have an unmediated relationship with reality because of the curse of the poet: that the poet cannot participate directly in life because isolation is necessary for creativity. The mirror is the imagination, which reflects reality but is not the same. The idea of Lancelot failing her could be the failure of the reader to fully enter into the world of the poet, with the Lady of Shalott dying because of the mutual exclusivity of real life and the creative life.

I found the topic of Lady of Shalott very interesting and effective.It's the story of Lady who looks at the world only from the mirror.what is more interesting is that nobody knows the cause of the curse that will happen when she looks out the window.This makes the story mysterious.At the end of the story we see the power of love.Although she knows her prohibition,she can't stand when she sees the reflection of Sir Lancelot. This part is very influential,also.

With the lady of shallot,Alfred, Lord Tennyson showed the effect of love once again.Again we see that if the topic is love, nobody listens to rules even if it is to die!The story and the song was very interesting.But if i were Alfred, i would let boy:) the see the lady.It would be a happy ending:)

The song of Lady of Shalott was very emotional,also.It reflects the woman's incurability very well.It is impossible not to be emotional when there is a love in the story anyway:)))the lesson that we learned this story was one of the most beautiful lessons I enjoyed.It made a good final for us...

The Lady of Shollot is a mysterious woman living in a tower alone, only workers in a near field hear her singing songs. She has a curse that is very different and its origins are not identified in the legend; so it is unclear. the woman is fed up their life, but she is not aware of her situation. The last straw is her seeing Lancelot. This causes the begining of the curse. In this legend, Shellot leaves the tower, but the tower has no a door. Therefore it is a bit odd, gives the legend mysteriuosness. Shellot' death is very strange because she dies her grief and loneness but nobody notices this. In fact everyone thinks she spends a happy life in the tower.

Among stories that we have read, the Lady Of Shallot is the one which affected me very much. I wish Lancelot saw Shallot. By the way, Lnacelot would struggle or try to reach her and Shallot didn't die as well as Shallot's love would be real.

That was the last week of the term in which we read the lady of shallot and I think that poem gave the most impression me because I found something from I in this poem. It is like our Kız Kulesi story in Turkey.Although the poem was written in the Victorian Age, I think it still has the trace of today, because whenever the women are somewhere, they have the same feelings, it will not change. Women all are very emotional humanbeings. Another important point is that I think the author Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote such a poem in order to do a satire. The lady, Shallot is in a castle; she is different from all the women in the country , but she can not do anything she wants, she can not go outside,can not do something other women do. The author wants to explain that he is like the lady, Shallot. He is very famous,almost everybody in the country knows him but he is not free just like the lady. He can not write anything he wants; he has to write about just what the king wants. The author and the lady are in the same situation, I think so. Furthermore, the song was wonderful. While listening to the song ,you are going towards Camelot:)) That was a fantastic poem...

l find the story very interesting and touching.being imprisoned into a tower, and even unable to look out of the window directly must be very hard for a human being, even if it was a girl.l understand the value of my freedom with this poem. We see that even in this situation human can fall in love at the first sight, but this love causes her death.

ı think it reflects the features of the romantic period very well.ıt ıs the good product of imagination.the story is quite affective and when you read it you can imagine the scene of the event.Although it is not a real event or it is not possible to be real, we can find some points related to real life. for example people can do something which is dangerous for their life , for their contemporary desires. then it becomes a trouble for them. here the lady looks from the window for camelot, which is prohibited, the mirror shattered and the lady died at the end.maybe sometimes we should control ourselves even if our feelings are very strong...

The poem reflects the restrictions over women living at the Victorian age. It is a bit strange that this age was seemed very modern but there are restrictions such as women's having no right on their money and children. I think the author tried to attract attention to this point by writing this poem.

Lady of Shallot is the most unusual story for us in this term. I hope all of ELTian like her and her story. Loreena Mckennitt sings a song about Lady of Shallot:

But Lancelot mused a little space
He said "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace
The Lady of Shalott."

King Arthur’s history includes Lady of Shallot and of course handsome Lancelot.

The Lady of Shallot by Alfred, Lord Tennyson had a tremendious effect on both the listener and the reader.Indeed I can confess that it was one of the best poems I've ever read.To be honest, as a student not following the lectures regularly, I was really satisfied and it ruined all prejudicies in my mind against English literature. I am sorry for the lady that even she doesn't know the reason why she was refined to this tower. It was very impressive.

At first,the beauty of the nature is depicted such as willows,aspens and lilies,but in the rest of the poem the story turns into a sad and tragic scope.The poet is very good at chancing the scope from cheer to sadness and curse.In that way he can make the reader feel the woe and sadness more.That is what I think.I don't agree with the firs interpretation.Women are free to do what they like.We can't give them certain boundaries of life to live in.
