Water, water everywhere....

Coleridge's long narrative poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" appeared in the "Lyrical Ballads" he compiled collaboratively with Wordsworth. Putting the poem next to Swift's "A Modest Proposal", it is easy to see the radical differences between the Restoration and Romantic literary periods. Coleridge uses the "naive" narrative style of the mediaeval ballad, a central story of sin and redemption common to much folklore (remember "Everyman"), and supernatural elements like those found in many legends (remember "Beowulf"). He creates a hypnotic effect by using ballad prosody- short lines of alternate tetrameter and triameter, and emphatic repetitions of nouns, verbs and phrases, meaning that the reader as mesmerised as the Wedding Guest was.

Look at the effect of these verses:

"The land of ice, and of fearful sounds where no living thing was to be seen.

Did send a dismal sheen :

Nor shapes of men nor beasts we ken--

The ice was all between.

The ice was here, the ice was there,

It cracked and growled, and roared and howled,

Like noises in a swound !"

And....

"And I had done an hellish thing,

And it would work 'em woe :

For all averred, I had killed the bird

That made the breeze to blow.

That made the breeze to blow !
But when the fog cleared off, they justify the same, and thus make themselves accomplices in the crime.
Nor dim nor red, like God's own head,

The glorious Sun uprist :

Then all averred, I had killed the bird

'Twas right, said they, such birds to slay,

That bring the fog and mist."

Then the famous lines...

We stuck, nor breath nor motion ;

As idle as a painted ship

Upon a painted ocean
And the Albatross begins to be avenged.
Water, water, every where,

And all the boards did shrink ;

Water, water, every where,

Nor any drop to drink.

The very deep did rot : O Christ !

That ever this should be !

Upon the slimy sea.

About, about, in reel and rout

The death-fires danced at night ;

The water, like a witch's oils,

Burnt green, and blue and white."

The poem, like a mediaeval ballad, finishes with an explicit moral:

"And to teach, by his own example, love and reverence to all things that God made and loveth.
Farewell, farewell ! but this I tell

To thee, thou Wedding-Guest !

He prayeth well, who loveth well

Both man and bird and beast.

He prayeth best, who loveth best

For the dear God who loveth us,

He made and loveth all."

Just as Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" has inspired many artists and musicians over the centuries, Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" has been a similar source of inspiration.

There is even a statue in a port town in Somerset thought to be have inspired Coleridge to write the poem:

"Ah ! well a-day ! what evil looks
Had I from old and young !
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung."
As you've probably guessed, this is one of my favourite pieces of English Literature!!!

My brother is a fun of Iron Maiden.when I am at home , I'm ALWAYS listening to these kinds of songs!I didn't know my brother's song would be useful for me in an English Literature lesson :)It was a very impressive story indeed. In the lyrics of the song the most affective lines for me are " The mariner kills the bird of good OMEN
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves A PART OF THE CRIME."
when this part is sung ,I understand that something bad will happen!

We should love all of the God's creatures
Because just like us they are part of the nature

Sometimes you can benefit from the poison of a snake
That you may not dare to touch even when it is fake

Have you ever seen a creature as energetic as an ant
Or can you be as hardworking as it is,no I bet you cant

All of us are in the sea of life and are rower
That love will strengthen us if we lose our power

We must love all the things that God made!
We may have different religions but we are united in same beliefs. The rime of the ancient mariner shows that perfectly.
To be honest,I don't like the songs of iron maiden because I can't dare to hear rock music:)

The Rime of the ancient mariner is a wonderful poem written in Iambic Pentameter. I always remember The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner with its strange and solemn music (it is stil in my mind). Killing the albatross determines nearly all process of events, and later the redemption of the Ancient Mariner (realizing thr beauty of sea snakes ) is the fateful part of story. This shows Coleridge's romantic philosophy, as well as a deep tie with the natural world...

The poem is nice,i liked the last part of it;it informs us to love everything God created, and the song is better than the poem..I like rock music,i didn't know Iron Maiden, but when we listened the song in the class,i decided to download the song and i enjoyed it.

The song was in harmony with the poem. Also it will always remind me the poem with its important conclusion."We must love everything that God made!"

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner relates the events experienced by a mariner on a long sea voyage. The Mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony, and begins to recite a story. an example from poet;

Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.

A supernatural, strange and also brilliant heroic journey myth. In the poem, the albatross is a kind of symbol. Coleridge did a good job of writing the poem in a way that the reader would be forced to believe it without realizing it. In a sense we could say that through the tale, he placed the "fear of God" in people that made them more likely to believe the story. When people are afraid of something, they have more tendency to be committed to something, and Coleridge takes the advantage of this.
And the theme of the poem is "universal charity".
Also it gives a very important lesson to the readers that "we must love everything that God made!"

"He prayeth best, who loveth best All things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all"

I enjoyed the Iron Maiden song when I listened to it in the class. Also, the poem is good, too. We should always remember the message that we must love all the things that God made.

The story is very mysterious. Also the part of it:
''The very deep rot: O Christ!
...
About, about, in reel and rout''
is comic.
I liked the repetition of words also the rime:''The land of ice, and of fearful sounds'' The sentence is easy on my ear.
I liked the song, also I was surprised a bit, because the song doesn't resemble a folk song in my head. It is very different. It is Rockkkk! :)
I was influenced most with the message in conclusion part. ''For the dear God who loveth us,...''

content of the poem is realy understandable and it gives these message to us; we, all people, should like creatures that God made... I enjoyed this poem, it is narrative that's it tells us things through stories! and the song that we listened in class is really convenient with the poem...

It is entertaining, because of a bird sailers are dying and our mariner is suffering. of course it is important to understand the writer's aim here which is to love every creatures in the world.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge writes this to sign that the beautiful of the nature. If you love the world and the nature you live, everything will go perfectly.
In my opinion, looking the world pesimisticly effects everything around us, everything about our life. Being optimistic is beter, and loving the nature, seeing the beatiful aspect of the life makes us happy.

meryem gündüz said...

Samuel Taylor Coleridge this work as beautiful as our Turkish poet Yunus Emre. Yunus emre loves the nature and see the world as a wonderful art of the God.

Loving nature, praying, seeing the the wonderful creature in the world, and accepting these make everybody happier, so love the world we live. Give importance to our nature.

The ancient mariner, in a dangerous moment, was impressed by the water-snakes. But was his attraction to the water-snake sourced from his love for natural creatures? The mariner was in hell when there was nothing. But water-snakes, though look ugly and slimy, impressed the ancient mariner. It was not from her hurt but it was from her situation.

nurhayat said...

I agrre with meryem.Like Yunus Emre, he advocates the idea " love everyhing because of Creator of them."

I think it is all about how we look at life. İf you adopt optimistic approach and make things right, drawing lessons from our mistakes that are results of our wrong desicions, everything will be allright. Just as a great thinker say; ‘ A person who looks at things positively thinks positively, so s/he takes pleasure of life’.

The Ancient Mariner was inspired and based on the 1797 poem of the same name Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge a contemporary of William Wordsworth and William Blake . In the poem, the captain (The Ancient Mariner) tells the story of how his ship was driven south storms and the strange happenings that followed. The moral of the story is that "we should love all creatures created God."

I liked the topic of it because The Rime of the Ancient Mariner gives us such a message that we should love eveything that God made.Whether they are living things or not, they altogether help us anyway.People should be aware of this and it will not only make us happier, but also make people realize the perfection of the things around them.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner has made me again think that we all should take attention to our behaviors towards nature and we ought to love all the things the god created and we have no right to destroy and do away with things the god created. I think it is a good point in the poem that the mariner wants to tell the story everbody because he wants nobody to do the same wrong thing like he. We understand from here that he is now regretful for his mistakes. In addition, the poem has some similarities with Beawulf. There are some supernatural elements in both. As for the song, I rarely listen to rock music but I don't know the reason but when I listened the song in the classroom, I loved it. Maybe thanks to Iron Maiden, I don't know...

I think redemption part of the Ancient Mariner is excellent and it emphasizes that we must like each creature in the world and it gives this idea in an effective way so it is impressive.

Repetition is Coleridge's inevitable item used in his poem. The main idea of the poem " We should love everything that gos makes." is so important that the poet shows us successfully.

The rime of the ancient mariner is second work that affects me in this course; it is the best work after Romeo and juliet. Here I recognize that God is always with us,God created us God loves us...There is a version of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” that includes the etext, audio narration and even illustrations - which might make it helpful for those that are interested in the story but would like to also listen to it and watch:

The "Lady Of Shalott" is a lovely and sad poem about a tender spirit who cannot face life but once removed. And the lilting, haunting beauty of the words is absolutely breath taking.Especially the song of it is really perfect.I offer this poem to ones who have never seen it before and I will be the one who cause such beauty:)

A Modest Proposal..
"Swift appears to suggest in his essay that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies." So yes, it's drastic and absurd on purpose. ;)

Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.. It is the cries of the women..In this period there are still some people who treat women as an object, and still there are women who are always silent, they have nothing to say, they have no rights to live. Maybe today's women are not brave enough or they are not as brave as Jane..I support Jane because I am really feminist:) Women are not objects, can not be objects and will never be objects..ın this work the part where Mr Rochester wanted to buy something such as jewellery, clothes etc. Jane was really angry so was I..

London by William Blake...the poem 'london' is a lovely poem but I hate the way he has described london as 'chartered street' or neither do I like the words he has used like 'blackening', 'chimney-sweepers' or 'harlot's curse'. this poem tells us how horrible london was at the period of Blake:)

GÖZDE İNCEKARA said...

again,I think william blake is trying to point out the horrible parts of London and looking at all the bad views of it in a very negative way. He is forgetting about the good parts of London as well and is trying to create a sense of fear when he says in every infants cry of fear

Unknown said...

This rime is very mysterious and the origins of the curse is very unclear and not defined properly. For example; why does the mariner kill the albatross? It is vague, but in some aspects it is very beneficial to human beeings. It teaches us that we love all God's creatures.

Unknown said...

The Rime of Ancient Mariner is very interesting poem, especially the topic of it.People always kill creatures, but nothing happens to them.Maybe the reason of the Mariner's curse is not murder of the Albatross, who knows, but Mariner thinks that all bad things he experienced are because of this bird.Whether the bad experiences of Mariner are because of his murder or not l agree the idea that we should love all God's creators...

mac flecknoe. It is written in a sarcastic way and ı think john dryden knows how he attacks Shadwell. Although john dryden says Shadwell is the son of dulness and stupity, shadwell cant confirm this.John dryden uses sh--- abbrevations and nobody and also shadwell cant understand this.ı think it is a big poem. he thinks shadwell is the son of richard flecknoe who is an untalented man like shadwell. john dryden is a clever man he knows how to attack shadwell. he writes this poem ironically and clever way.

when the hope dies, the person dies, too. Although ı know this before, ı am impressed again. ı think ıt is such a intersting story that one can love the novel whenever he/she reads. ıt is true for me in I could understand more clearly the meaning. ın the first sight one can think jane eyre is an ordinary novel; however, this impression is not true when one can think the character and the conditions of that time ıt is understood more clearly. Even this is considered a huge novel. ın fact there is a rebellion against the limitations.jane eyre shows how a woman can do ıf she wants.Although mr. rochester wants to buy expensive jewellery but she doesnt want. ın victorian age women have no rights and jane is different the ideal woman's profile in that time she is independent and wins finally what she wants. ın the first stage she is orphan and does not have anything she also suffers from many things but she doesnt give up her hopes. ı think we should not give up our hopes, too. now we have almost everything such as woman are not seen as the victorian age, we can do whatever we want ıf we believe.

ı want to write about pride and prejudice. As the women hve no rights at time they have to marry only some reasons like money; however,in this novel the girls like elizabeth and jane have the chance to marry for love.
ı think there should not be so many pride in love people misunderstand each other.because of pride and predujice they have to struggle. at the and they marry ı think the real love is this. although there are lots of handicaps, they dont give up.

I LIKED IT VERY MUCH...
